CLE COURSES: CONVENIENCE, QUALITY, EXPERIENCED-BASED
.

"The Statistics of Compliance" course has been designed for employment law attorneys who assist their corporate clients in meeting the reporting and affirmative-action requirements of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Aimed at in-house and outside defense counsel, it teaches participants how to use statistical testing in a preventative fashion, to minimize the risk of discrimination lawsuits.

Our courses are unique for two reasons. First, we come to you. We present these courses at your firm and at a time that is convenient for you. Second, our faculty members -- Integral's expert economists and statisticians -- combine the highest degree of academic training with years of experience in expert-witness work.

That kind of experience is essential. On the one hand, we've seen how crucial expert testimony can be and how important it is to have the right expert do the right thing at the right time. But we've also learned that a competent expert is not enough. The value of the expert's contribution often depends on the analytical skills of the attorneys handling the case. In our legal system, only counsel or the presiding judge is permitted to question an expert witness. So the way the court hears the expert's testimony depends greatly on how good the examining attorney is at eliciting it.

In our experience, the quality of the attorney's examination varies directly with the amount of economics or statistics s/he knows. Unless counsel has attained at least a general knowledge of the expert's area, the questions s/he poses -- on direct and re-direct, on cross-examination, and even at deposition -- will not be as penetrating and as effective as they might otherwise have been. The goal of each of our courses is to provide participants with the analytical tools they need to handle expert testimony well.

We began presenting these courses in 2001, shortly after New York State made continuing legal education mandatory. We have presented them since at many well-known law firms, at bar associations and at CLE institutes. For a list of presentations...
